What survives, and what does not

Modern formats do most of the work. WebP typically lands 30% below an equivalent JPEG, and AVIF roughly 50% below, at the same perceived quality. The quality slider controls the encoder directly, and the before-and-after sizes are measured on the real output, not estimated.

What quality setting should I use?

Around 80 for photos on the web — below about 60 you start seeing blocking in flat areas like skies. Screenshots and flat graphics do better as PNG.

Should I use WebP or AVIF?

AVIF is smaller at the same quality and is supported by every current browser, but some desktop applications still cannot open it. WebP is the safer choice if the file will be passed around rather than served on a website.

Does compressing remove my photo metadata?

Yes. Re-encoding through the browser only ever sees decoded pixels, so EXIF and GPS cannot survive. For photos you are about to post publicly, that is usually what you want.

Can I compress hundreds of images at once?

Yes, and it is genuinely faster than a cloud service because there is no upload. The limit is your device memory, not a queue.
