The short version: we never receive your files, so we cannot lose them, sell them, or be compelled to hand them over.

Your files

Files you open in damnfiles are processed entirely inside your own browser. They are not uploaded, not transmitted, not cached on a server, and not seen by us at any point. This is a property of how the product is built rather than a promise about how we behave — there is no upload endpoint for a file to travel to.

When you close the tab, everything you loaded is discarded from memory. Nothing persists unless you explicitly download a result, which saves to your own device.

The engines you download

Some tools need a large engine to run on your device — about 7 MB for text recognition, and 31 MB for video. Your browser fetches those from this site the first time you use the relevant tool, exactly as it fetches a stylesheet. That request tells us a file of that name was requested; it carries nothing about your document, because your document never leaves your machine.

What we do collect

Ordinary web server logs for the pages themselves — the URL requested, a timestamp, and a user agent — kept briefly to keep the site running and to spot abuse. These describe page requests, never file contents, because file contents never arrive.

Your appearance preference (light or dark) is stored in your own browser’s local storage and never leaves your device.

What we do not do

• We do not require an account, and we do not ask for your email to release a download.
• We do not sell, share or licence any data about you.
• We do not run cross-site advertising trackers.
• We do not train anything on your documents. We do not have your documents.

Your rights

Rights of access, correction, erasure and portability all apply to personal data a company holds about you. In our case the honest answer is that we hold essentially none: no account, no profile, no file copies. If you would like the server logs relating to your requests removed, ask and we will remove them.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects you, the change will be dated here. A change that introduced file uploads would be a change to the product’s entire premise, and it would be announced loudly rather than buried in a policy update.
